New Year, BEST You!

I don’t know about you, but I absolutely love starting off a new year. There is something special about taking time to reset after the holidays and before the new year. Then, when the ball drops at midnight, you get to choose a whole new you. By January 7th, your skin will be glowing (since you put down the wine glass and found your ‘Swell bottle from last year), your body will feel strong (you’ve taken a different class every day for a week!), and you even bought a planner because you’re ready to write out your daily intentions. You’ve revamped your diet, your fridge puts the local farmer’s market to shame (and Whole Foods for that matter). You’ve even cut out frivolous spending like your pre-work latte and that extra mani-pedi touch up you really don’t need. You are strutting into the office with pride.

Fast forward… it’s February. You feel overwhelmed, you’re wound up so tight you feel like you’re going to explode. You haven’t written a single intention for the week, you don’t even know where your planner is. You feel like you’re slacking because you haven’t done seven workouts this week which only makes you feel worse. You blame yourself, but, LIFE HAPPENS. Yes, you ate carbs this week (it was Dim Sum, how could you say “no”?!), you had a glass of wine with your friend, you haven’t cooked your own dinner the past three nights.

We want to stop you here and ask you this: what was so wrong with the 2018 version of you? Was your diet that bad? Was your drinking out of control? Did you need to completely transform your life? NO. DEFINITELY NOT. We saw you last year, you were fabulous. You had some wins, whether at home or at work, you have things to be proud of. Did you struggle at some point in the year? Probably! That’s okay, we all do every now and then.

So as we cruise in 2019, let’s get some things straight:

  • You are already strong, smart and radiant.

  • Let’s look at everything you did in 2018 - all the good and all the hard (remember not bad- hard and challenging)

  • Write it all down so you can visualize it, then see what you want to tweek. No need to change completely, just tweek.

  • What can you do to set up for a successful 2019?

  • What does success mean to you

Let’s jump into that rabbit hole one more time, here we go again LOL! ***What are they picking? From their own list, we should set that up more if so.*** See below

Start by writing out any changes or improvements you’d like to make in 2019. Feel free to jump into the self-improving rabbit hole again, make a long list of anything that comes to mind! Then… stop, and pick two things. Why just two? You are human. Maybe it’s the job, kids, your social life, general life responsibilities. Two is plenty. You master those two by mid year, check in with yourself and maybe add one more from your list within reason. Remember, you are already awesome.

We know, we know. This is all coming from a Pilates studio. BUT we are The Pilates Reformation. We care about your life outside the studio, not just your performance in class. We don’t have all of the answers, but, we do know a thing or two about reforming your body.  Is Pilates going to make me lose weight? How many times should I be working out? Can I take Pilates everyday?

Is Pilates going to make you lose weight?

  • Pilates is going to reshape your posture, make you taller, longer and leaner looking.

  • You will not bulk up with Pilates.

  • Let’s address weight loss - you will lose weight when you expend more energy than you take in. This means, you must burn more calories than you eat. However, weight is an arbitrary number. The number on the scale isn’t telling you how much muscle you have, how many hikes you go on, etc.

  • Cardio is absolutely necessary for your heart health (the biggest cause of natural death in the US is heart disease) You need to get your heart rate up for 20-30 minutes 3 to 5 times a week and you will see AND feel the difference.

  • Cut the booze (at least a little), the fat will melt away.

How many times should I be working out per week?

  • The body was built to move- you need to be moving everyday, whether it is taking a walk, stretching, Pilates, cardio or strength training.

  • You’re brain is a muscle too! Don’t forget to put some meditation in there (whether that’s actually meditating, reading, whatever your method is!)

  • Do not focus on the number- get out there and move that bod. Mix it up!

Can I take Pilates class everyday?

  • The answer is actually, yes! You can if you want to and your schedule permits - check in with your body, make sure you stretch too.

  • Pilates is awesome for many reasons, one of our favorites is that is has no impact on your joints

  • Classes are designed to help you build mobility while strengthening, but this requires focusing the mind too. Make sure you’re engaged in class and you can’t go wrong.

  • So yes, it is safe to do everyday- not to mention at The Pilates Reformation we have an array of classes to keep your interest so you will never get bored from doing the same thing over and over again.
